A Version of Life

Robert Power is dead. Sort of.

Trapped in his studio, lost in a maze of projects, artist Robert Power drifts between life, death and a dream of Icelandic nirvana.

His only connection to the outside world is filtered through Valerie, a virtual assistant with ambitions and dreams of her own.

As reality and illusion blur, Robert’s existence reaches its breaking point in this hypnotic, genre-blending odyssey—an exploration of creative chaos, fate, and the art of being (or not being).

A Version of Life is an autofictional theatre piece created by Robert Power, blending elements of music, theatre, film and visual art. The narrative surrounds the life of an artist trapped in his studio with only a virtual assistant to help him navigate a troubled existence. When an unexpected turn of events propels his career to its zenith he must decide whether to accept his destiny or to remain in isolated anonymity.

Developed at Trapdoor Theatre, University College Dublin with the support of Creative Futures Academy, A Version of Life premiered at Dublin Fringe Festival 2024, leading to its selection for Edinburgh Fringe Festival 2025.

Directed by Olivier Award Winner, Donnacadh O’Briain (Electrolyte, Rotterdam)

A Version of Life is set for its first national tour in 2026.
